The new Lucy and Scratch puppets
We are absolutely delighted to pull back the curtain on our latest custom theme park puppets in collaboration with Away Resorts, one of the UK’s premier holiday destinations. Known for their hit production Bear in the Woods, Away Resorts recently underwent a creative evolution, redesigning their iconic mascot characters for a new era.
They tasked the Fuzzy Lightbulb team with a high-stakes translation: taking sleek CGI designs and breathing physical life into them as high-performance custom theme park puppets.
The Challenge: From Pixels to Physicality Translating digital textures into the tactile world is where we thrive. To ensure these prototypes were stage-ready, we leaned into our “over-engineered” philosophy:
-
Precision Aesthetics: We utilized custom-printed fabrics and meticulous color-matching to ensure the physical characters look identical to their digital counterparts.
-
Innovating the “Oversized” Build: These puppets are large and impactful, featuring a rear-entry access system (rather than the traditional underside entry) to give performers better range and comfort.
-
Modular Durability: We engineered detachable, replaceable heads and arms—allowing for easy maintenance without taking the character out of commission.
Built for the “Theme Park Life” Let’s be honest: theme park puppets lead a tough life. They are handled by the public, used in daily high-energy live shows, and moved constantly. Most suppliers struggle to balance “lightweight” with “indestructible,” but we don’t believe in compromising.
Our prototypes are built to be resilient and hard-wearing enough for the rigors of a resort season, yet expressive and light enough to keep performers from tiring during a long set.
What’s Next? We are incredibly proud of how these prototypes encapsulate the new CGI designs. As these characters roll out across parks in the coming months, we’re already back in the workshop on some other “top secret” builds we can’t talk about just yet.
