We were thrilled to be part of the exciting new Mythica area at Legoland Windsor, creating intricate animatronic puppets for walkabouts and meet-and-greets. The character Bits and Bobs—a Lego creature made from leftover scraps—appears in the Flight of the Skylion ride, where he journeys through a portal to become a real creature.
Our team crafted two identical versions of Bits and Bobs, incorporating a clever fake arm illusion and a complex lever-powered mechanism developed with Adam Keenan FX. Each puppet featured:
- Head tilt and swivel
- Upper and lower eyelid blinks
- Independent ear twitches
- Sound effects and speakers
Originally designed during the pandemic for the ride’s opening, the first version of Bits and Bobs was ready to go. However, with the ride’s delay in opening and a redesign by the production company, we created a second version to match the new character design.
These puppets have stood the test of time, delighting guests at Legoland Windsor for over four years—and can still be spotted today in the Mythica area.
Here is a gallery showcaseing the build process of these puppets (they are a LOT of work) :
The Rise of Walkabout & Meet-and-Greet Puppets
Walkabout and meet-and-greet puppets are taking the resort and entertainment industries by storm. Seen in some of the world’s biggest and most beloved theme parks, these dynamic characters offer a level of flexibility and realism that traditional mascot suits simply can’t match.
Why Puppets? The Unmatched Benefits
- True-to-Life Scale & Proportions
Unlike mascot suits, which are restricted by the performer’s size, puppets allow for accurate proportions at any scale. Whether life-sized or oversized, characters retain their intended look—no awkwardly massive heads or distorted limbs. - Instant Interaction, Anywhere
These puppets can appear anywhere, anytime, making them perfect for spontaneous performances and magical guest interactions. - Comfort & Performer Freedom
No more being trapped inside a bulky, foam-filled suit—especially crucial in hot climates. Puppets are lightweight, breathable, and far easier to maneuver in crowded or tight spaces. - More Hygienic & Practical
- No shared suits, reducing the spread of illness.
- Minimal cleaning requirements—no lingering sweat, odors, or maintenance hassle.
- A More Approachable Experience
- Smaller puppets feel more inviting and less intimidating for young children.
- Child characters can be the actual height of a kid—not an oversized, towering version.
- Limitless Design Possibilities
From hand puppets to shoulder-mounted creatures, step-in styles to illusion-based designs, the creative potential is endless. Walkabout puppets allow characters to break free from human form, creating more immersive and believable interactions.
For entertainment that’s engaging, practical, and truly magical, walkabout puppets are the future.
